Redmi 1S - Red Alert Another Threat is Coming

Mi Philippines has finally announce the arrival of Red 1S on September 4, 2014 via Lazada Philippines.

The Redmi 1S is dual sim/ dual standby unit at 4.7 IPS 720p HD IPS Display, this should provide a clear, vivid and detailed viewing pleasure with a 312ppi.

Powering the device is 1.6GHz Quad-Core Snapdragon 400 MSM8228 Processor with Adreno 305 GPU. Chipset by Qualcomm delivers performance plus endurance without straining on battery life. The 1GB RAM and 8GB EMMC storage gives it ample memory and storage.

You wont be disappointed with its optical features with 8MP Back camera ƒ/2.2 aperture as well as 1.6MP front camera. Capture moments with Zero shutter lag and variety of modes including facee recognition and wide angle shots for selfies or group selfies.

Connectivity features include WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS plus HSPA+ data connectivity. USB-OTG is supported for hosting usb devices.

Battery is 2000mAh removable. Other added features includes Mi Sound Hi-Fi System with Dirac sound technologies and Dual microphone noise reduction.

For 5,599.00, Mi Philippines offers the complete package for the budget consumer. If I may enumerate: quality HD display, performance grade chipset with bigger storage, better camera and extensive connectivity features at a meager price tag. Xiaomi is setting trends for which competition try to match or catch up.

***With comparison to what I wrote when I spotted Hongmi 1S, it seems they are one in the same product however if this the case it may have a display made by Sharp / AUO (Apple supplier) or Corning Gorilla Glass 2 and Samsung / OV Back-Illuminated Sensor for its camera. See my article here on Hongmi1s

Cherry Mobile Cosmos One - Limited Edition Octa-Core Phablet

Celebrating their 5th year, Cherry Mobile is offering Limited Edition Cosmos One.

Putting a dash of premium in its smartphones, making use of pleather material to provide a classy feel. Though by the looks of camera it does reminds me of One Plus One and that speaker grid kinda like Zenfone 5. Guess Cherry Mobile is taking notes from its competition.

The devices sports a 5.5 inch HD Display with Corning Gorilla Glass 2 protection, big HD Screen great for games and entertainment and yet still sturdy and scratch resistant.

Powering the device is 1.4GHz Mediatek MT6592M Processor, it is mobile version of Mediatek Octa-Core Processor but I would expect it to perform incredibly well considering it still has Mali-450MP4 GPU and coupled with 1GB RAM and 8GB Internal Storage (expandable). For reference, this chipset powers the likes of Redmi Note (not enhanced) and MyPhone Infinity Lite.

For its optics, a 14MP BSI primary Back camera with LED Flash as well as 8MP Front. Though I suspect Cherry Mobile doing interpolation magic again however Photo/Video should come out decent or superb (hopefully). There's a dedicated camera button of the side for easy breezy click.

In terms of connectivity, the regular WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS is present. HSPA+/3G serves its data connection features. Added support is the USB-OTG and Miracast for plug and play of device via OTG cable and channeling to wireless external display.

Battery is handled with 2500mAh energy pack.

Added value features include enhancement for video and sounds as well as wireless cloud printing.

To conclude, Cherry Mobile is very aggressive and covering every phone sizes. The Cosmos One has perfect timing, 5.5 inch HD Octa-Core Phablet for 6,999 is hard to come by. It is surely a Limited edition with specs-price consideration. The Cosmos One is The One Phablet to rule them all... for now.

Cherry Mobile Flare S3 Another Flareful Success

No Not Flare 3 but FLARE S3... Yes these two are different yet they both share some similar qualities other than name.

The release of Flare S3 was a surprise since Flare 3 was just release a few weeks ago.

It looks pleasing enough with a fair amount of side bezel but wish they could trim a bit on top and bottom. The back comes with pleather with stitch pattern like those on omega icon.

Flare S3 packs a 5 inch qHD IPS Display with OGS technology. Powering the device is 1.3GHz Mediatek Quad-Core Processor coupled with 1GB RAM and 8GB Internal Storage (expandable via MicroSD).

For its optics, it features a 13MP BSI primary back camera with LED Flash and 5MP front camera.

WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, the regular connectivity is available plus HSPA+ data connection.

Battery is at 1800mAh removable.

Out of the Box you do get Flare S3 Unit, Back Cover, Battery, Charger, Data Cable, Headset and Manuals. Oh by the way, you should ask to include a warranty card that should be also included.

Flare S3 in comparison to Flare 3, they both have same display, chipset and connectivity features but the difference lies in camera. Camera 13MP versus 8MP Back and 5MP vs 3MP front though I am quite sure interpolation is at work and so they might just have the same hardware. A photo/video output comparison should best compare in this aspect. Flare 3 does have a bigger battery at 1980mAh.

To conclude Flare S3 another great bang for buck smartphone. For 3,999.00 same as Flare 3, we will surely see another round of long lines at Cherry Mobile Stores. This might be an alternative for Flare 3 because of supply constrictions? like when first flare and burst came out. Hopefully Flare S3 brings a better sensor that will totally differentiate it from Flare 3.

P.S. NO OTG Support...

Nokia Lumia 530 - Quad-Core Budget Lumia

Want a Budget Quad-Core Lumia? Nokia by Microsoft gives you Lumia 530.

The device sports a 4 inch WVGA TN Display powered by 1.2GHz Quad-Core MSM8225 Snapdragon 200 Processor with 4GB Internal Storage and 512MB RAM.

For its optics it features only a 5MP back camera with 1/4'' sensor size and video recording 480p @30fps. No front camera here.

The regular WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS including HSPA+ data connectivity are the phone’s connectivity features.

I believe it sticks to the old battery of Lumia 520 with 1480mAh capacity. With more cores, battery life is reduced a bit.

Overall, Lumia 530 is Microsoft budget offering that comes with humble specifications for basic users for only 4,990 pesos. It's more of a cutback of the old Lumia 520, less the IPS display gone and down to 4GB from 8GB storage, just a chipset upgrade. For the basic consumer and those who want to shift from feature phones or those who want to try Windows Phone.

Asus Transformer Book T100 Gets 64GB Version

One of the most popular tablet-laptop Hybrid - the Asus Transformer T100 finally has 64GB Version.

For those of you not yet familiar with the T100, the device sports a 10 inch" 16:9 IPS HD (1366x768) Display with 2GB of RAM running on Windows 8.1. Equipped with 1.2MP front-facing camera. For connectivity, it packs WiFi and Bluetooth as well as I/O ports Micro-HDMI and Micro-USB. All these hardware are on the tablet while on the keyboard dock it just house a One (1) full pledge USB 3.0 port and 500GB HDD.

The Transformer Book T100 was well received because it performed extremely well that able to run flawlessly regular applications including those in the windows app store. Intensive applications such as Photoshop, Video-editing tools and some well known games are playable. This set it apart from netbooks and laptops with old/new atom/celeron processors. It is also a champion in terms of battery life that can last up to 11 hrs or half a day of continuous usage. I can attest to this such that I own one and is currently using it to write this article.

Asus first launched the T100 with Grey 32GB variant that is powered by 1.33GHz Intel Baytrail Z3740 Processor. Now it finally gets a bigger 64GB Internal storage plus higher clocked 1.44GHz Z3775. This should provide more internal storage and a boost in processing speed.

The Best Tablet Laptop Hybrid just got better and even though it face new and upcoming threats from other brand, the Transformer Book T100 still manage to reign supreme.

Spotted Red, Grey and White via Villman for 23,988.00 Pesos which was the price of 32GB variant in its initial launch.

Redfox WizPad Lite - Cheap Windows 8.1 2 in 1 Tablet Laptop

The cheapest Windows 8.1 2 in 1 Tablet/Laptop in the market for only 9,300.00 Pesos ($211)!!! Redfox Philippines' WizPad Lite.

The WizPad Lite features a 8 inch WXGA (1280 x 800 px) IPS Display with 10 multi-touch points. Powered by 1.33GHz (1.86GHz Turbo) Intel Baytrail Z3735E Quad-Core Processor with HD Graphics coupled with 1GB RAM and 16GB Internal Storage that is expandable via MicroSD up to 32GB.

For its optics, front and rear has 2MP camera. WiFi and Bluetooth for wireless connectivity and supports Miracast technology for channeling wirelessly via external display. I/O ports are the following with Micro SD slot, micro USB (Supports OTG), 3.5mm Headphone Jack, mini HDMI, DC-in. Lithium-ion polymer 3.7V/4000 mAh battery will last you up to 4 hours - continuous usage according to Redfox.

The tablet runs Windows 8.1 and comes with Microsoft Office 365.

To wrap up, the WizPad Lite is very competitive affordable Windows tablet/laptop hybrid. With Intel Baytrail Quad-Core Processor, it outperforms other netbooks and laptops with older intel chipsets. Whether for work, play, surfing the net or doing intensive task as photoshop and video editing, I am for sure the processor can manage. Front or Back, you got it covered in terms of camera and same goes with connecctivity with WiFi and Bluetooth plus external connectivity via OTG, mini HDMI and a separate port for charging. One major flaw though is the 16GB of storage which may leave user with just small amount around 4-5GB free space but then again you could always store all your files via micro-SD Slot. You could run any regular windows applications in addition to those apps available in Windows Store. Typing jobs will be easy with Bluetooth Keyboard and on Microsoft Word. The WizPad Lite is very promising that delivers performance, complete connectivity and Windows 8.1 experience for just below 10K. Kudos to RedFox for offering this one.

Samsung Galaxy Alpha Announced

Samsung announces its premium Galaxy Alpha.

Style. Slim. Metal. Sticking to S5 style and feel that retains its faux tactile soft back cover with curved corners plus a touch of metal for its frame, Samsung Galaxy Alpha is luxe in smartphone form.

The devices packs a 4.7 inch Super AMOLED with 720p HD Resolution powered by Exynos 5 Octa-Core Processor (1.8GHz Quad A15 Cortex Cores and 1.3GHz  Quad A7 Cortex Cores) coupled wiith 2GB RAM and 32GB Internal Storage (No MicroSD Slot).

A 12MP back camera with LED Flash and 2.1 MP front serves its optical features. No word if ISOCELL is present though.

For its connectivity, it is equipped with Dual Band WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac HT80 MIMO(2x2), Bluetooth 4.0 BLE / ANT+ and NFC. Long Term Evolution (LTE) is supported for its data connectivity.

Samsung TouchiWiz on Android 4.4.4 KitKat along with S-Apps and Ultra Saving Power Mode for that Samsung experience for this smartphone software. Other notable features such as fingerprint and heart rate sensor is also available.

The device measurements is at 132.4 x 65.5 x 6.7 mm and at only 115g, so thin and slim. Though to achieve this I guess they cut back on battery with only 1860mAh.

Overall, Samsung Galaxy Alpha is more a S5 mini or lite version. The metal frame accent is welcome to address the questionable plastic construction of Samsung devices. Exynos 5 Octa-Core for performance and energy efficiency and the latest connectivity features and sensors. However biggest worry would be that measly battery, guess it the sacrifice for beauty. It is timing for Samsung to announce Galaxy Alpha early, such that the new iPhone is just around the corner and so I think Alpha is designed to counter the next threat. For 29,990 well it surely is set to compete in terms of design and hardware.

It's now available locally. So want this beauty? Order here:

Gionee Elife E7 Mini - Octa-Core 13MP Selfie SmartPhone

Gionee Philippines just announced via their Facebook - Gionee Elife E7 Mini.

By the looks of it, it appears to be rectangular plastic slab with rounded at the top and bottom. Seen also is a swivel camera that can easily turn to be use as rear or front camera. It has a 4.7 inch 720p HD IGZO (By Sharp) Display which gives you high pixel density, vivid colors, crisp image and text quality and great viewing angles.

It is a Mini but it packs a powerhouse of 1.7GHz Octa-Core Processor by Mediatek with Mali450-MP4 GPU. Memory is at 1GB RAM and comes with 16GB of Internal Storage but sadly NO microSD slot for storage expansion.

For its connectivity features, it is equipped with the regulars such as WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and HSPA+ data connectivity. It is a Dual-Sim Dual Standby Smartphone so you can have access to two networks.

Moving to software side of things, E7 Mini runs on Amigo 2.0 a customized version of Android 4.2 that makes use of only homescreen for displaying your contents/apps (yeah, more like iOS) and comes with tons of animations and transitions.

Main selling point is the Swivel 13MP Camera with LED Flash (like OPPO N1). With just a turn capture moments with great detail Back or Front. You are sure to get amazing selfies with this one as well as quality video-chats compared to other phones.

Battery is just only 2200mAh so with minimal use you get through the day or two but with moderate or heavy usage, might I suggest a powerbank.

To warp things up, the Elife E7 Mini is a great handy camera phone whether back or front you get the high pixel quality captures. Pocket-able and also powerful, a Bite Size Monster. Gionee really focused on riding the selfie revolution and it might succeed.

Cherry Mobile Pulse Series

Look what we have here:

Here is the New Pulse series by Cherry Mobile.

The Pulse packs 5 inch HD IPS Display with Dragontrail protection powered by full pledge 1.7GHz Octa-Core Mediatek Processor together with 8GB of Internal storage and 1GB RAM. Optics features a 13MP Back Camera with LED Flash and 5MP Front.

Next is the Pulse Mini that comes with entry level specs - 4 inch WVGA IPS Display powered by Dual-Core Processor with 4GB Internal storage and 512MB RAM. Basic camera with 5MP Back/VGA front.

Both device does have the same connectivity features as WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS as well as HSPA+ data connectivity.

For power, Pulse has a 2000mAh Battery while Pulise Mini is still undisclosed.

The Pulse Mini is priced for 2,699.00 and Pulse is at 6,499.00 which makes it cheapest Octa-Core offering of Cherry Mobile.

To wrap things up, I have expected this much from key players in the market introducing Budget Octa-Core. Cherry Mobile Pulse is highly competitive in terms of specs with HD Drgontrail and high pxiel cameras (interpolated me thinks) But it will surely perform with MTK6592 Processor versus the mobile version on MyPhone Infinity Lite. Nothing to say much on the entry-level Pulse Mini. Excited to see much on the clash of Octa-Cores and so the battle is now set in motion.

Antutu Benchmark Pulse:
Courtesy of Facebook User Zayne (Cherry Mobile Pulse United Group)
Cherry Mobile Pulse is a powerhouse with 29K/30K score . Performance is well above other octa-core and international brand smartphones. This may well because of Android KitKat that is optimized for performance for Pulse.

2300mAh Battery

At a glance, it does sports simplistic aesthetics but when you look inside hardware blew us away. It is powered with the latest Snapdragon 801 chipset with Adreno 420 GPU that is on par with other flagship in the market. The Nubia series also features EMMC 5.0 for its storage that brings ultra fast read/write speed. These internal changes are the staples of flagships.

Another thing to look at is the optics with Sony Exmor RS sensors as well as OIS, the quality for photos and videos outputs will be unquestionably better. A more reliable front-facing camera is also great for selfies and video-chat.

Connectivity is a serious consideration for phones coming from China but in this case the Nubia are on track such that it supports international bands. (LTE 1800 / 2100 / 2600)  (HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100), It is also a first for me to see Dual-Sim with Snapdragon 801. Yet you still get regular stuff like WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS. USB-OTG is supported too for these devices.

The Nubia Z7s is really caught my attention with its flagship specs, price and dual-sim functions. ZTE is surely one of the Top dogs in the industry and is still highly competitive versus Samsung, Apple, Huawei and Xiaomi.

It now available here:
ZTE Nubia Z7 Max LTE Black - ₱19,849.00

ZTE Nubia Z7 Mini LTE White - ₱15,532.00

Other than LTE, the device also has WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS as well as HSPA+ if LTE is not available in your area. Big Note internet speed is network dependent so even if you have the latest connectivity features, data connection is limited to what your network allows or capable of.

Comes only with 1700mAh battery so if you are on-the-go and data-on might expect to go down in just couple of hours.

Overall, Rio LTE offers ultra-fast data connectivity paired with dated software plus decent quality specs and optics for a budget price. I commend MyPhone for making LTE accessible to budget-wise geeks young or old generation. Market is getting competitive, it excites me what will be the next trends to come.

Cherry Mobile Rover: Anti-Weather?

We can't deny our country has always been hit by strong tropical cyclones that brings floods and power outages and some of our phones gets water damaged and can't last. Cherry Mobile might see this as an opportunity to introduce their heavy-duty waterproof smartphone - The Rover.

Courtesy of Facebook User Ron Roman.

As you can see just simplified specs with 3.5 inch Capacitive Display powered by 1.3GHz Dual-Core Processor running Android 4.2 Jellybean. You do have a 5MP Main Back camera and VGA (.3MP) Front Camera for optics. For connectivity, I assume you get the regular stuff WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS but that IR Blaster is another first for local brands (No world on data connection). Massive 3600mAh battery will surely endure days of on/off power. Dual-Sim so even when one network is out, you could always rely on the other. It is said it is waterproof but this should be seen and tested. Cost at 5,999.00 Pesos.

This phone is all set for emergencies that could withstand flood and rotating brownouts. It might not have what you want in a device but it does really cater to your basic smartphone need. Cherry Mobile should release this now with countless of typhoons and calamities battering the country with Rover on hand surely one can be prepared.

BlackBerry Z30 is now Available via Third Party

The BlackBerry Z30 has arrived unofficially via third party seller.

This new flagship phones seeks to bolster up sales of ailing Blackberry. The popular brand had significantly lost and failed to counter the iPhone and Android frenzy that led to dismal sales and market-share decline and so company cost-cutting and restructuring. Even with the release of Z10, still Blackberry struggles but hopefully the Z30 will change that.

The Z30 design is not new still haunts me of old blackberry with combination of black with silver accents and lining which comes with carbon fiber back. Led Notification Light is also present. It sports a 5 inch 720p HD Super AMOLED Display. 1.7GHz Dual-Core Qualcomm MSM8960T Snapdragon S4 Pro with Adreno 320 GPU coupled with 2GB RAM and 16GB of Internal storage (expandable) are its internal specs.

Long Term Evolution (LTE) gives it lightning fast data connection and is well supported with the regular WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS. USB-OTG is also supported. For its optics, it packs 8MP with LED flash at the back and 2MP at the front. HD Video recording is supported. Comes with a 2880mAh battery pack.

BB10.2 is both mixed-inspired OS from gesture controls and multiple panes as seen on Meego, Menus from Android and graphical iOS. Still we can't argue that BB has always been a messaging powerhouse though the physical qwerty keyboard is now gone as replace with virtual ones.

Yet overall, BlackBerry Z30 is not competitive when pitted against other flagship and even midrange from notable brands and newer ones. We might see another loss for Blackberry if they continue to offer underwhelming devices. But if you are a BB Lover then this smartphone is for you regardless of what I say.
